Maine Race and Sports Wagering

Harness racing has taken place in Maine since 1950. The Maine State Harness Racing Commission is appointed by the governor to oversee live harness racing and offtrack betting facilities as well as the adoption of rules that ensure integrity in the industry. Interstate simulcast racing is permitted at tracks that have had at least 150 live racing dates in the prior two years.

Maine is home to two racetracks: Bangor Raceway, connected with the Hollywood Casino, and Scarborough Downs. State fairgrounds also host horse racing in Maine.

In August 2017 Maine legalized daily fantasy sports through legislation titled An Act To Regulate and Tax Sports Fantasy League Activities in Maine. The bill requires operators to pay licensing fees and 10% of their gross revenue.

In May 2018, following the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to strike down PASPA, State Rep. Louis Luchini told the press he anticipates “multiple” sports betting bills will be introduced when legislators reconvene in 2019.
